SCHOENBERG STANDARD 12-FRET
ENGLEMANN & COCOBOLA

We do the Schoenberg Standard because of the unique quality of sound that resides only in the 12-fret body. There's a throaty, rich tone that combines with an openness, a freeing-up of tone that is very exciting. The pictured Standard is a 00-size cutaway out of Engelmann spruce and cocobola back & sides.

(left) Our new peghead inlay—Eric has been playing with this design on the computer (Adobe Illustrator) for years. It began as a scan from a photo of a rare Stewart banjo, and has been altered to fit the shape of this peghead. Final clean-up and execution was by Bruce Sexauer, the builder of this guitar.
Our Yin/Yang Style of Design

We've been working with cocobola for several years now—it's an exciting wood. Much like Brazilian rosewood in that it is very dense (actually more so than Brazilian), with beautiful colors and grain patterns. This set is from a dozen sets brought up from Mexico by Marc Silber. It's unusual in that it's been air dried for years and it is wonderfully quartersawn with stright grain (much of the cocobola is wildly grained and erratic).

On this instrument we have paired the cocobola with Engelmann spruce—they are particularly compatible woods. The cocobola is strong, tight and punchy, while the Engelmann is rich, warm and sweet.. It's the yin of one tone and the yang of the other that creates the completeness of tone coming out of this box: our way of striving towards perfection.


(right) This photo unfortunately doesn't do the cocobola justice. It's extremely straight and tight grain all the way across, very unusual for cocobola.
