Welcome to the online home of Schoenberg Guitars!

We are two overlapping enterprises here at 106 Main Street in Tiburon, California. First, we are our own tradition-based Schoenberg Guitars, representing the very best of the hand-builder's art in sound-quality, playability & projection. And, second, we are the friendly brick-and-mortar store where these and other great instruments are bought, sold, traded & repaired. Our unique inventory includes many of the finest vintage Martins & Gibsons available anywhere--even some one-of-a-kind museum pieces-- as well as old & new guitars, mandolins, ukuleles & banjos, all from brand-name-makers and hand-builders. And we carry the best-sounding instruments we can! We cater to the experienced musicians looking for 'lifetime' instruments and, also, to the absolute beginner looking for an inexpensive yet playable entry-level one. In fact, we have outstanding instruments at all price levels, and these include a custom set-up! (We have a reputation for our great set-ups, done while you wait.) We also host in-shop concerts by world-class musicians & offer lessons from a first-rate instructor. And here, our online home, is the place to find all of our wares & information about our activities.

Please take a tour of our website and contact us with any questions. We update our inventory almost daily.

Also, if you check in the menu list (up on the left) under "Departments" you'll find our Archive Gallery, a listing of our sold instruments with photos & info. It's a collection of fascinating guitars and a useful history of the acoustic guitar, in some ways.

And here are some hints to help you with any of your searches.

Finally, we always have great 'starter' instruments for beginners in stock -- ukuleles start at $59 & guitars at $199, all with professional set-up included at no charge. You'll be surprised by the quality you get for so little money!

Thanks for dropping by!!

Joe Walsh, Molly Tuttle & John Mailander In Concert

Friday, April 7 at 8 p.m.

A superlative combination -- our good friend Joe Walsh on mandolin, the remarkable Molly Tuttle on guitar, and on violin, the subtle beauty of John Mailander. Joe, who was last here with Grant Gordy, holds down the mando chair in “Mr. Sun,” a new-grass superstar ensemble with Darol Anger & Grant, has toured extensively with ‘The Gibson Brothers,’ and also teaches at Berkelee College of Music in Boston. His 2016 CD, “Borderland,” features his singing and writing to wonderful effect. Molly, a multi-instrumentalist and singer, graduated from Berkelee and has appeared on Prairie Home Companion with her father, Jack. She’s been voted ‘Best Guitarist’ and ‘Best Female Vocalist’ by the Northern California Bluegrass Association and won the 2016 International Bluegrass Music Association Momentum Award for instrumentalist of the year. Her recent CD features John on violin, and together they have toured the country appearing at venues like the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley. John, also a graduate of Berklee, recently played fiddle in Steve Martin & Edie Brickell's musical, Bright Star, for it's premier run in New York. John, too, was nominated for the 2016 IBMA Momentum Award. His recent CD is ‘Walking Distance,’ on which both Joe and Molly appear. Tonight we’ll experience instrumental tour-de-forces, melodious tunes that will stick in our ears,  and the gorgeous harmonies of folks like the Everly Brothers, the Gatlin Brothers, and the Carter family. These three are among the best of the next generation of bluegrass standard bearers; they will not disappoint!

“One of the best mandolinists of his generation . . .” — CBC-Newfoundland

On Molly: “[Molly Tuttle] sings with the gentle authority of Gillian Welch, yet plays astoundingly fleet flat-picking guitar like Chet Atkins on superdrive.“— Paul Zollo, American Songwriter Magazine

On John:  “John Mailander is a wonderful fiddler, with great improvisatory and compositional skills.”—Tony Trischka

Martin Grosswendt & Susanne Salem-Schatz In Concert

Friday, May 19 at 8 p.m.

Start with two compelling voices, an uncanny sense of harmony and a deep grounding in traditional American music.  Add stunning guitar work and a warm, intimate performance style, and what do you get? Martin Grosswendt and Susanne Salem-Schatz. A master of pre-war blues and Southern traditional music, Martin’s fingerpicking, bottleneck playing and singing amaze and move audiences, critics and musicians alike. His knowledge of the music’s sources and creators is deep and those stories he weaves into every performance. A veteran of the Boston roots music scene, Susanne can slip into any genre and make it her own; soulful blues singer one minute, sassy honky-tonk gal the next.  Together they show a deep love and respect for the roots of classic blues, old time, early country, and honky-tonk. Their recent CD, Old Songs, New Hats, features drop-dead harmony singing and dazzling picking on songs from the 1920’s onward.  Come join us for their first appearance at the shop!
