Product Description
1934 Gibson Nick Lucas, serial number ink stamped on the label, batch #1078 ink stamped on the neck block; both are 1934 Gibson numbers according to "Spann's Guide to Gibson." This is a great example of the rare rosewood 14 fret Nick Lucas. The sides appear to be Brazilian and the back difficult to tell, though Indian rosewood seems most likely. The Nick Lucas model was made from 1928 to 1940 and in that period went through two body shapes, 12, 13 and 14 fret neck configurations, and backs and sides of mahogany, rosewood and maple. Most rosewood models are seen with a 13 fret neck, a tailpiece and an archtop style bridge, made from '31 to '33; the 14 fret rosewood version only appears in late 1933 to 1934.
This example came from the family of the original owner, who appears to have played it lightly for a few years and then put it in storage. The key to the case is in its original envelope in the case pocket, along with a set of replacement Grover tuners from the period (one original tuner had a spinning button; it's in the case pocket along with the other 5 tuners from the replacement set). The guitar is in beautiful condition, the small sunburst with strong vibrant colors, almost no playing playing wear, original bridge, pins, and beautiful original hard case with purple plush lining also in excellent plus condition. There is a repaired, splinted top crack at the B string from the bridge to the butt, Mark Tossman was able to splint the crack with period timber and touch it up so that it's barely noticeable. He was also able to get the truss rod working by heat treating the neck during the re-fret job, along with a new ivory saddle. This is a fabulous example of the classic Gibson Nick Lucas, Gibson's top of the line flattop guitar during the late 1920's and early 1930's.
